Waterproof and breathability numbers appear on almost every technical ski jacket, but bigger numbers do not automatically guarantee a better day on the mountain. Fabric ratings are useful comparison tools only when you understand what they measure—and what they leave out.

Real performance depends on the complete garment: the face fabric, waterproof membrane or coating, seam construction, zippers, ventilation, fit and how you layer underneath. What does a waterproof rating mean?

How much breathability do you need?

Wet coastal snow or frequent storms
